Barrel Aged Hermannator

Our original Brewmaster Hermann Hoerterer designed Hermannator as a seasonal gift to friends & family in 1987. It soon became our flagship brew, the most anticipated beer of the year. 2017 marks the 30th anniversary of Hermannator. To celebrate we’ve aged Hermannator in red wine barrels, leaving it with beautiful notes of red wine, sherry, and plum that will only get better with time.

Alcohol by volume: 9.5% ALC.VOL
IBU: 25
Availability: Limited Release
Format: 650ml bottle
Ingredients: Water, barley, hops and yeast
Malts: Superior Pilsner, Crystal, Chocolate, and Wheat Malts
Hops: Perle (60), Super Galena (35), and Willamette (0)
Barrel: First use, 2 months, neutral red wine (CA,USA)
Aroma:  Moderate chocolate malts blend with medium toasted oak and a prominent black cherry note. Alcohol is readily apparent.
Appearance: Dark Chestnut Brown with bright red highlights. Creamy, light tan head.
Flavour: Rich chocolate and crystal malts are quickly supported by an acidic dark fruit note that cuts the heavy malt and brightens the finish. Balance is malty, but the fruit note plays with the chocolate into the slightly lingering finish.
Mouthfeel: : Smooth assertive mouthfeel with a deep malt body and a surprisingly light finish.
Overall Impression: Hermannator Ice Bock is a well loved and established beer. By aging it in red wine barrels the plum and sherry notes are added upon to create a wholly different experience. Fruitier, brighter, and dangerously easy to drink. The additional 2 months of barrel aging leaves an aggressive red wine note that is sure to age beautifully for those that can resist drinking it all right away.

Vancouver Island Brewing began as Island Pacific Brewing Company in 1984 and is one of BC’s original craft breweries. Some of our beer has been brewed for over 30 years and we offer some of the most awarded beers in Canada!
